Balayage at home, how to do it in 3 moves and photos to share!

Balayage at home, how to do it in 3 moves and photos to share!

Of the balayage we have spoken several times during the recent past. Therefore, if you have followed us with particular affection in recent months, we are sure that our in-depth analysis of one of the coloring techniques most used by women most attentive to fashion will not take you by surprise. Today, however, we want to go a little further, and try to understand if the balayage is also feasible in your home, or if it is an exclusive of your hairdresser. In other words, how can you do balayage at home? And with what results?

Let’s start with the premise that balayage is not a simple “coloring” of the hair, but is a particularly innovative and sophisticated technique that will allow you to have very natural lightening , in contrast to the base of color. Therefore, it is a more advanced version of the old “highlights”, but it is a permanent color that gives even more natural and luminous reflections.

Having established the foregoing, and since it is a permanent coloring and with complexities far superior to ordinary ones, what we can advise you is … do not proceed with the domestic realization of such a technique, because it is necessary to approach this style with the right experience and awareness.

If however you want to try the luck of a realization “ do-it-yourself “, you can read further. And discovering that, in the end, knowing how to make a potential balayage at home can be useful to be able to fully understand its characteristics.

So start by understanding what the areas can be illuminated, based on your face and the current color of your hair. To do this, sit calmly in front of a mirror, in a well-lit room, and try to understand which areas deserve a lightening. Regulate yourselves thinking that balayage needs a discoloration on the tips only.

Remember again that balayage is done almost exclusively on natural hair . Therefore, if you are already dyed, we advise you to wait for the discoloration. In addition, it is good to perform the balayage on a light or medium-light hair (on the dark it would create a not too suitable contrast) and not to overdo it: the treatment is stressful enough for the hair, and do it more than 2- 3 times a year, the hair may become tired in the long run.

Having done this, apply the lightening color on the individual strands, going down a little bit at a time. In this way you will also be able to “play” with a potential regrowth, while still giving the impression of a pleasant apparent look.

Balayage on short and medium hair

The balayage is certainly one of the best techniques to be able to have well-groomed and lightly stressed hair. Of course, the above does not mean that you will have to exaggerate the application of these colors, since in the long run – especially if you have fine hair – the hair will be weighed down. However, balayage is also one of the softest techniques, since it allows you to create natural shades, with application only on some strands, and never on the root.

A very important aspect to clarify, if you are close to experiencing the balayage, is related to the succession of “intents”. In other words, if you are at the hairdresser to lighten your hair with balayage, focus first on choosing the haircut, and only then focus on the balayage. In this way the lightening will start in the “right” part of the locks, especially if you want to use two light tones.

Trust only a professional

Finally, let us make one last tip: to obtain significant results, the balayage must be carried out by a professional. Therefore, not only do you suggest not to resort to do-it-yourself applications, but also avoid resorting to presumed professionals without sufficient experience in the field. Correcting balayage errors could in fact cost you dearly both on your wallet and on the health of your hair.

3 things to know absolutely about balayage!

In this part dedicated to our focus on balayage , we want to dwell on some particularly important aspects of this technique of coloring , which was so successful has matured over the past few years and which, probably, will be able to replicate these hopes in the near future. Here are three tips that we would like to share with you, in order to support you in avoiding the common mistakes that often women who approach the world of balayage for the first time are inclined to commit.

Don’t do it too often

The first point we want to focus on is not to carry out this coloring too often. Although it is true that a good part of the new balayage techniques are nonetheless not very invasive on the hair, it is equally true that often repeating this method of coloring too many times, over the entire length of the hair, can lead to weakening the hair fiber, and stress the hair too much. It is better then not to carry out this application more than 2-3 times a year: if you see that, at the juncture, your hair needs a recovery, you can ask your hairdresser to adopt a simple touch-up, thus avoiding intervening on the entire hair .

Take care of your hair after treatment

The balayage does not end in the beauty salon, but it is a treatment that needs attention and care. Therefore, try to avoid falling into the common mistake of neglecting hair care after having undergone this beautiful treatment. Get the best nourishing and moisturizing products from your trusted hairdresser, and do not disdain, once every two weeks, to proceed with a more intensive mask that can help hydrate, protect and make your hair shiny.

Better to anticipate the cut

If you want to get closer to the world of balayage , always keep in mind that it would be a good habit to “anticipate” the cut, before the treatment. In this way you will be able to have renewed and brighter tips. On the other hand, if you carry out the treatment on already weak hair with damaged ends, you risk making a nice mess. Therefore, if you intend to carry out a haircut, as well as coloring through balayage, try to make the two actions more integrated .

If you have had the opportunity to act wisely, the final effect that you will be able to have will be that of a general lighting of the crown, with strokes of light that will go also to benefit your face. You will thus be able to obtain a long-lasting hair style, which will be well appreciated in the medium to long term, as if the reflections caused by the sun had leaned gently on your hair.

Having said that, we always remind you that it is right to speak carefully with your hairdresser, who will be able to outline every pros and cons on such treatment, preparing you psychologically for the approach with this recent and fantastic technique. So evaluate with him the methods of treatment and remember to let us know how it turned out: after all, this is the right time to break the delay, and welcome the hypotheses of balayage with open arms!

New styles to be adopted immediately

Balayage at home, how to do it in 3 moves and photos to share!

Do you like the balayage ? We have talked about it many times over the last few years and, if you have any doubts about it, it would therefore probably be appropriate to try to brush up on our previous insights on the matter and recover some concepts and some ideas that we had the opportunity to share with you . Today we try to focus further on this fantastic coloring technique, enriching it and declining it for short hair: ready for this new journey in the coolest hairstyle of the moment ?

Let’s start by remembering that the balayage is a permanent coloring that allows women who choose to embrace it with the conviction of lightening some areas of their hair , generating a very pleasant contrast . It is also important to try to remember that, contrary to what many women believe, balayage can be applied with particular charm not only on longer hair, but also on shorter ones, where the contrast effect will still have a way of unraveling with particular effectiveness . The important thing is, of course, not to fall into the temptation to make gross mistakes, which could upset the chances of being able to achieve a good final result.

Mistakes to avoid

Let us now try to concentrate adequately on the main errors that are committed on balayage , and which should instead be avoided. The first, and most important, is to want to perform balayage at home at all costs. Let’s repeat it once again: in order to get a good result you need to be able to master coloring techniques that are not exactly “basic” and you need to have some skill in applying. Therefore, always try to resort to the hands of an expert hairdresser who can firmly guide you to your destination.

Furthermore, remember that balayage is usually done on natural hair , respecting its basic color. It is also very suitable for medium and light colors, which will favor the hairdresser making his job less difficult. For dark bases, however, there is a very useful way of resolution: a lightening pre-treatment, which will allow you to have medium shades with a very cool natural effect.

Again, always remember that before proceeding with the balayage it is important to have very clear ideas about your haircut. In other words, you should never cut your hair after application and above all perform balayage on damaged ends. So, try to agree on a procedural order: first the haircut and then the application of the color.

Another advice particularly dear to women who will undergo balayage is to avoid abuse, in order not to alter the nature of the hair. Therefore, be careful not to exceed with the treatments, setting as limit no more than 3 balayages per year . If between one treatment and the other you notice that the roots grow back and you don’t want to wait for the next appointment, you can make a small touch-up with creams that can cover the roots only, lightening them slightly, without intervening on the rest of the crown.

For all women who have not had the opportunity to deepen this technique, we can well remember how the balayage is an invention technique not too remote in time, and useful for being able to lighten the hair, giving the own hair an effect similar to that which could be obtained after prolonged exposure to the sun. In other words, with the balayage it is quite possible to obtain clear and natural reflections, which ideally contrast the color base. The result? A beautiful “lively” hair, dynamic, lively, with a ripple of hair color.

Can I do it alone?

As well as other coloring techniques , the balayage can also be recreated independently at home. Of course, our advice is to avoid do-it-yourself, unless you are expert test tubes (and even in this case it is still better to rely on another professional who can better manage the technique on your head). Confide therefore with a good hairdresser who can understand your needs, suitably lightening the hair in the tips, with a shade that can respect your preferences and your natural color.

Being a rather sophisticated technique, our advice is to avoid the do-it-yourself … unless you are an expert! The risk is in fact to venture along particularly dangerous roads, and towards nuances that are not able to give the desired result. It is therefore better to rely on a good hairdresser who can understand your needs, and who can lighten the tips appropriately with a shade that not only can respect your preferences, but also fits perfectly with your natural color.

In addition to the above, be careful not to confuse the balayage with the more famous shatush. In fact, shatush provides only a lightening phase, while balayage provides for both a first discoloration and a second coloration in order to make the effect more natural. However, nothing tells us whether balayage is better than shatush: try looking at some photos with the two contrasts, and choose the effect that best suits you!

New hair styles with “tiger’s eye” color

Our readers who have a better memory will already remember that this is certainly not the first time that we have the pleasure of talking about the hair with the color “tiger’s eye” , a of the main trends of hair fashion of the moment, able to conquer – increasingly – the preferences of many women in particular, and to establish themselves as one of the new “hottest” proposals of the beauty salons of Worldwide. But what are tiger eye hair? And how is it possible to achieve them without making a mess?

What are tiger’s eye hair

Let’s start with a basic concept: the tiger’s eye hair are so called because their color recalls – precisely – the tiger’s eye stone, whose coloring can regenerate the typical contrast between golden yellow and dark brown, very warm, exactly like a tiger’s eye!

How they are made

As far as the methods of their realization are concerned, we have already had occasion to remember, in a recent study, that this kind of color goes to take up the balayage : it follows that coloring with this technique must be carried out only by a good expert hairdresser! The light and dark streaks must in fact be made carefully, longitudinally and in a balanced way, to then blend them gently into the base color, to avoid the effect with vertical lines.

Who is it suitable for?

There are many celebrities who have been pleasantly tempted by this coloring technique in recent months. Many of them started from a light brown color , others from a darker brown color . In principle, starting from your brown hair, at least medium-long, you should not be afraid of errors: it will be sufficient to calibrate the details with your colorist to be able to get fantastic results!

Finally, a final mention of the maintenance of the foliage subject to balayage. The treatment, although very attractive, should not be repeated too often in order not to excessively stress the hair. It is therefore better to approach balayage two or three times a year, guaranteeing a long duration and a performance that will certainly not fear the passing of days and weeks!

Balayage or shatush?

In this sense, it is good not to confuse the balayage with the more famous shatush . Lo shatush – which we have talked about a lot over the past few years! – in fact, it is a technique that involves only one lightening phase, contrary to what happens with the balayage , which provides for both a first discoloration and a second coloration that allows to make the effect more natural. It is therefore a twofold, non-alternative choice: and nothing will suggest whether one or the other is better. Instead, what we recommend you do is take a look at our site: inside you will find many photogalleries dedicated to the first and second techniques. At the end of this consultation, you will certainly find the technique that best suits you!

DIY Balayage: step by step

The first thing to do is to get everything you need to do the shades well done at home. The best thing is to use the classic bowl to mix the ingredients and the brush that you will need to mix, separate the strands and to apply the product on the hair. These tools are reusable and are very practical for applying color to hair, so it’s an investment that is practically made forever. The products that are then used to perform the balayage are the following, which you can buy in specialized stores for professionals. In particular, the 30-volume oxygen bleach and a sachet of dye anti-yellow are needed. Alternatively, there are specially made kits on sale, with a specific brush for easier application.

Brush the hair well and untie any knots. The hair will be dry, not washed, but free of products such as lacquer, foam etc. Divide the foliage into three horizontal bands. Collect the two upper ones with the clothespins and start working on the lower band, on the nape.

One technique is to take one strand of hair at a time . Holding it outwards, tight at the bottom, a triangle is formed. With a little product on the brush, spread it on the outermost sides of the stretched strand, on the V, so to speak. Keep the brush vertical, not horizontal. The application must be as quick as possible, so that there is not too much time between the application of the product on the first and last locks.

In doing so, the effect is very natural, similar to degradè . For a more pronounced effect, after performing the application as indicated, apply the most product with the brush on the tips. Take strands here and there, brushing them from top to bottom and then concentrate with the product brush in the final part. By wrapping the ends of the locks with foil, these will be much clearer and more marked. The papers must be checked and removed once the desired shade of blond is reached. If some strands are ready unlike others, wash the single strand.

Once the shutter speed is over, wash your head normally. It is perhaps advisable to make a good nourishing mask to give the hair immediate energy. Every 2 weeks we recommend making an anti-yellow shampoo. Being treated hair it is advisable to make a nourishing mask a week or a treatment with jojoba or coconut oil.

Balayage and henna: for a natural treatment

Mother nature provides us with a natural and ancient bleach: henna. This product does not penetrate the hair like chemical bleaches, but deposits on the surface externally, binding to the cuticle. The hair therefore becomes thicker, more resistant and more voluminous . Unlike classic bleaching, the hair is reinforced with henna. Henna has very effective coloring potential, which is why it has been known since ancient times: by Babylonians, Egyptians, Sumerians and other ancient peoples. These used it not only for coloring, but also as a soothing, anti-inflammatory and emollient product. It is therefore not surprising that this product is also a cure-all for the hair. It is also an eco-friendly and non-polluting dye.

Products for DIY balayage

Since the exploitation of balayage has exploded, various products have spread on the market to do it at home. One of them is L’Oreal’s Sfumato Preferance. This product is available in 4 colors (2 for light hair and two for dark hair) and promises an intense and natural shade on both natural and dyed hair. The package also contains a brush for application. According to the reviews of those who have used it, the product is excellent, but not good on already colored hair, judging from opinions on the web . Another product is Colorista Balayage, also from L’Oreal de Paris. Also in this product a special brush is included for an easier application. The Nordic line of Testanera is also a good product to perform balayage at home . However, this is not specifically designed for shades, so you need to get the brush to apply it only where you need it.

For a gradual and undemanding lightening, there is the lightening Sunkiss by L’Oreal in two light colors. The product must be applied every time after washing the hair on the buffered hair and must not be rinsed. The strands on which the product has been applied will gradually become lighter. A product similar to this is Collistar’s Magical Gradient. In this case, however, it is not recommended for hair from brown to darker shades.
